Ever since the Dodge brand refocused its efforts to become a performance-focused division of the larger Fiat Chrysler Automobiles company, we’ve seen some exciting changes happening. That includes the launch of the all-new compact Dodge Hornet, as well as some progressive moves toward more energy-friendly vehicles. And according to Dodge, it won’t be long before we’ll be seeing the first all-electric version of the power-hungry Charger – one that will even manage to exceed performance of the Hellcat.
News of the electric-powered Charger was unleashed in the form of a concept car – officially titled the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT. First unveiled in August of 2022, the all-electric Charger draws from many of the iconic styling cues of the long-lived Charger, yet adds unique touches that help to set it apart.
While most concept cars are used to show future direction of a company, or to gauge consumer interest, Dodge has specifically stated that the Charger Daytona SRT concept is different. It has been designed with many features that are expected to make it to the production model. And with that in mind, rumor has it that the all-electric Dodge Charger SRT will be released as a 2024 model. If that’s the case, it’s likely that it will see a release date as soon as this fall or early next year with a spring release.
At this point, Dodge has stayed tight-lipped about anticipated performance outputs for the all-electric muscle car, but with the advances in technology, it’s expected that the EV will manage to exceed all expectations of electric power. It has been stated that the electric Charger will produce an output that even surpasses the 700 horsepower achieved by the barely-street-legal Dodge Hellcat series.
There has also been mention from Dodge about bridging the gap between gas-powered and electric vehicles. EVs are virtually silent, but Dodge has stated that the Dodge Charger EV will not only look like and drive like a Dodge, but will also sound like one, with special considerations made to amplify the sound enough to mimic the roar of a hellcat, with a system similar to that of a wind organ and pipes.
If you’ve been keeping tabs on trends in the industry, you’ve likely seen that many automakers have made strong commitments to begin transitioning their lineups to be fully electric over the next few years. Dodge is one of the many with plans to ride the EV wave, and upon reveal of the Charger concept, they shared that the gas-powered versions of the Charger and Challenger would be discontinued by the end of 2023. It’s all the more reason that we will likely still see the all-electric muscle cars this year.
