As a heavy-duty pickup, the Ram 2500 is built to take on even the toughest of jobs. From towing and hauling, there’s nothing it can’t do. But thanks to the recent addition of the Rebel nameplate, the Ram 2500 is also able to harness and leverage all that power for capabilities beyond just pulling. The Ram 2500 Rebel can conquer roads, but where it really shines is when the pavement ends. Let’s take a look at the engines and the one-of-a-kind specs and features that make the Ram 2500 Rebel an off-road expert.
While you might expect to find a single engine in the nose of the Rebel, there are actually two to choose from – one powered by gas and another by diesel. The former is a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that helps to balance power with smooth performance. It’s capable of 410 horsepower – enough to reach a payload of 3,140 pounds and 16,870 pounds of towing.
Helping to produce significant power with a healthy dose of efficiency is an available 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel engine. When firing on all six cylinders, and when paired to the six-speed automatic transmission, the engine is capable of a 1,970-pound payload and a towing capacity of 14,920 pounds.
Regardless of engine, you’ll have access to all of the following off-road features.
For a vehicle to effectively navigate various terrains, it’s important to have a strong frame and armor to keep the underside protected. The Rebel is built on a 98% high-strength steel frame, and is outfitted with substantial skid plates underneath which helps to ensure the transfer case and fuel tank don’t get dinged up. Added protection is available with the selection of the Cummins turbo diesel engine, which adds the option of a fuel tank brush guard.
Although the added protection helps, it’s the 11.1 inches of ground clearance that gives the 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel the ability to dodge problems from the start. Contributing to that clearance are massive, traction-focused 33-inch all-terrain tires wrapped around 20-inch black diamond cut aluminum wheels that can stand up to whatever falls beneath them.
Further enhancing the traction is a limited-slip differential that adds grip and optimizes engine power based on the terrain, allowing you to conquer sand, snow or mud. The Ram 2500 Rebel also allows you to drop into lower gear ratios with a 4WD Low option, and offers electronic locking to maximize torque distribution and to improve traction even more.
