Powerful Ram 1500 Engines Offer Plenty of Options

Tucked in the hood of the 2022 Ram 1500 you’ll find five unique engine options. While there are some that really stand out in terms of size and power, there are several that appear to be fairly similar. For that reason, we thought it would be helpful to break down the specifics of these powertrains to help you learn more about the capabilities and the unique functionalities that they can provide you.

At the top of the engine line is the supercharged V8, which delivers significant power numbers and near instantaneous torque. It’s available exclusively in the nose of the Ram 1500 TRX, and can pound out sports-car-like speed with the ability to go from 0 to 60 in as little as 4.5 seconds. Not bad for a pickup.

• 650 lb-ft of torque

The HEMI V8 with eTorque is the same as the standard HEMI V8 both in design and output, but it tacks on a few extra parts to enhance performance in the towing department. With the technology in place, there is an extra 130 lb-ft of torque for towing, ramping the maximum capacity up to 12,750 pounds.

With eight cylinders humming at all times, the HEMI V8 delivers legendary power and capability with the reliability that has become synonymous with the HEMI name. It offers the same horsepower and torque as the eTorque-equipped engine, but comes in with a slightly lower towing capacity of 11,610 pounds.

Similar to its V8 counterpart, the Pentastar V6 can have the eTorque system bolted on for a little extra oomph. With wide-range variable valve timing and two-step variable valve lift, the six-cylinder powertrain delivers smooth performance and plenty of towing power to the tune of 7,730 pounds.

• 269 lb-ft of torque

For the last few years, the EcoDiesel engine has gained prominence for its ability to achieve high-end torque output for additional towing capacity, while also remaining fuel efficient. With 12,560 pounds of towing capacity and the ability to stretch a gallon 33 miles on the highway, it’s the best of both worlds.
